Webmaster

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to ensuring that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible. Our members include the physicians, nurses, counselors, administrators and other health care professionals at 400 clinics, hospitals and physicians' offices in the United States and Canada. Our dynamic and innovative programs span a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of abortion providers and the women they serve. NAF's programs include: accredited continuing medical education; quality assurance and improvement; clinic security and law enforcement education; clinical, legal, and consumer publications; public education; public policy advocacy; group purchasing; and a national toll-free hotline.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining technical integrity of all NAF websites. Advising and assisting in the planning, development, implementation, conversion and maintenance of current and future web sites in an HTML or CMS site maintenance environment, working with HTML, ASP, PHP, CGI, Perl, Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, JavaScript, and Windows.
  • Working closely with program staff to ensure that sites are appropriately updated, dynamic, and user-friendly and conform to standards of usability and accessibility.
  • Acting as website gatekeeper responsible for managing and updating information coming from all sources, ensuring quality of writing and of graphic and other content, uniformity of tone, excellence of style and usage and conformity to NAF's style guidelines, and accuracy. Websites include content in languages other than English.
  • Developing and implementing processes for marketing and promoting sites, analyzing site traffic, and evaluating site effectiveness.
  • Developing prototypes of new Web applications.
  • Providing technical assistance and software training, as appropriate, to all staff members.
  • Assisting Network Administrator, as needed, in projects such as installation and configuration of hardware and software for staff, troubleshooting staff computers, maintaining List Server, and researching new hardware and software options. Serves as backup for Network Administrator in latter's absence.

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to a woman's right to choose abortion.
  • 2-3 years' experience in web page design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Advanced technical aptitude and knowledge of web technologies, software, and graphics applications and techniques.
  • Ability to work productively with design and content generating teams, both in-house and contractors, and understanding of effective Web authoring practices and presentation techniques.
  • Ability to work in UNIX and Windows server platforms.
  • Ability to implement and maintain Secure Socket Layer (SSL) data encryption and authentication.
  • Working knowledge of website development tools including Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Acrobat Professional, and of Windows office software including Microsoft Office Professional programs, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.

Case Manager for NAF Hotline

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in the United States and Canada. Our mission is to ensure safe, legal, and accessible abortion care to promote health and justice for women. Our members include health care professionals at clinics, doctors' offices, and hospitals, who together care for more than half the women in both countries who choose abortion each year. Responsibilities:

  • Work with women in difficult financial situations, including fundraising and financial counseling.
  • Sustain positive and supportive liaisons with NAF member clinics.
  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with partner organizations, including (among others) local and national abortion funds and the National Network of Abortion Funds.
  • Collaborate with Hotline Director on narrative and quantitative reports for funders, board, and other departments as needed.
  • Train Hotline Operators to assist in case management.
  • Provide back-up for Hotline Operators.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Individual must:

  • be strongly pro-choice,
  • have experience with hotline and/or counseling work,
  • have a commitment to empowering women,
  • be sensitive to diverse populations,
  • be able to multitask and perform effectively in a noisy, busy environment,
  • have computer and database experience, and
  • have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • be fluent in Spanish.

Hotline Operator

Hotline Operators answer the national toll-free Hotline and are trained to provide callers with unbiased, factual information about pregnancy and abortion. The Hotline Operators also offer: confidential and non-judgmental support, referrals to providers in the caller's area, referrals to funding sources, aid in understanding the complex maze of state abortion restrictions, and case management for women in difficult situations.

Qualifications:

Hotline Operators must be pro-choice, have some interest or background in reproductive health care issues, have a calm and friendly telephone manner, be able to deal with the public on the sensitive issue of abortion and have some office skills. Hotline Operators may also have previous knowledge of abortion issues, and previous hotline experience. Second language skills are very helpful, but not required. The Hotline Supervisor will train and supervise Hotline Operators.

Hours and Remuneration:

$8/hour to start. Positions are available year-round. Six-month minimum commitment required. Willing to work out academic credit arrangements. Position is part-time. The Hotline is open Monday to Friday 7 A.M. - 11 P.M. and Saturday and Sunday 9 A.M. - 9 P.M.

Clinic Defense and Research Intern

Note: this internship is not available for the summer of 2009

NAF's Clinic Defense and Research Department works with member clinics to improve security and assist clinic staff in dealing with threats and violence. The department also works with law enforcement officials to improve relationships between law enforcement and clinics, deter violence against abortion providers and pursue and prosecute those responsible for committing acts of violence. In addition, the department produces a monthly newsletter on incidents of violence against clinics and maintains a database of incidents of violence and disruption.

Duties Include:

  • Gathering and organizing information on anti-abortion extremists
  • Entering and compiling statistics on violence and disruption against abortion providers
  • Maintaining database of law enforcement contacts
  • Assisting in a wide range of projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated pro-choice commitment
  • Two or more years of undergraduate work with 3.0 GPA or above

Hours and Renumeration:

  • 40 hours per week
  • Modest stipend

Communications Intern

NAF's Communications Intern will work in the Communications Department, which:

  • Works closely with members of the press, responds to press inquiries, and pitches story ideas
  • Develops public education and research materials
  • Tracks press coverage of abortion-related issues
  • Manages NAF's website, blog, and online projects
  • Works closely with NAF patients who have chosen abortion and are willing to share their stories with the media, legislators, and the public
  • Conducts consumer outreach projects

Duties Include:

  • Tracks press coverage of abortion related issues
  • Creates content for NAF's website
  • Assists with all aspects of media relations, including development of press materials, press outreach, and press conferences
  • Develops public education and research materials
  • Supports marketing and outreach projects

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to a woman's right to choose abortion
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Background in English, political science, or communications

Hours and Remuneration:

  • 40 hours per week preferred in the summer

Public Policy Intern

The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in North America. NAF's Public Policy Department works to provide medical expertise to policy makers and to ensure that the voices of abortion providers and patients are heard in policy forums across the country. NAF's policy interns will work on legal issues, state legislative policy, and/or federal legislative policy.

Duties Include:

  • Performing legal research
  • Drafting memoranda, fact sheets, issue papers, and alerts
  • Assisting in other projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated pro-choice commitment
  • One or more years of law school
  • Coursework in constitutional law

Hours:

  • School year: The time commitment is flexible, but must be consistent and communicated in advance.
  • Summer: 40 hours/week preferred, modest stipend available.

Training and Education Intern

The Training and Education intern will work closely with the Training, Outreach, & Access coordinator to:

  • Perform research for specific projects;
  • Compile and analyze evaluation data;
  • Assist in meeting planning duties for NAF conferences;
  • Staff outreach tables at university events and professional conferences;
  • Assist in other projects as needed.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, detail orientation, and a desire to gain research experience;
  • Strong commitment to a woman's right to choose;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Background in women's studies, sociology, public health, or communications.
  • Previous research experience is a plus, but not required.

Hours:

  • School year: The time commitment is flexible, but must be consistent and communicated in advance.
  • Summer: 40 hours/week preferred.
