Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation (NAF) in response to the unveiling of the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act" by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid:
Although we are pleased that the Senate health care reform package does not contain the abortion restrictions adopted by the House, we continue to urge Senators to stand firm and not allow any further restrictions on abortion care as the legislation moves forward.
Previous versions of the House bill had included a compromise that reflected current law regarding insurance coverage of abortion care. However, at the 11th hour, anti-choice representatives used the reform of our country's health care system to further restrict women's access to abortion care.
Abortion care is basic health care for women and should not be treated differently than any other health service. NAF calls on the Senate to stop these attacks on women's health and ensure that women can access the comprehensive care they need, including abortion care.
