Those who share their stories
March 10 is the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers. We believe providers, who include clinic administrators, patient advocates, counselors, security personnel, medical assistants, nurses, advanced practice clinicians, and physicians, deserve to be appreciated and celebrated every day for their compassion, courage, and resilience. Through their dedication, innovation, and strength they make access to abortion care a reality for their patients.
NAF members have deep roots in this work. Our members include people who provided abortion care before Roe v. Wade and who developed patient-centered models of care and established welcoming, safe clinics more than 50 years ago. Today, the abortion provider community is strong and branches out to include Independent clinics, Planned Parenthood affiliates, physicians' offices, hospitals, and virtual providers.
Although we are weathering an unprecedented number of abortion restrictions and threats to abortion access, NAF members were made for this moment. They have dedicated their lives to this work and we want to thank and honor them in March and all year long!
March 10 was set aside in 1996 as the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers to commemorate the 1993 assassination of NAF member Dr. David Gunn, the first provider murdered by an anti-abortion extremist.

Abortion Provider Appreciation Day was established to commemorate the assassination of NAF member Dr. David Gunn, the first abortion provider to be murdered by an anti-abortion extremist. Since we started tracking incidents of violence against abortion providers in 1977, there have been 11 murders, 26 attempted murders, 42 bombings, 194 arsons, and thousands of incidents of criminal activities directed at abortion providers.
In the last year, our members have reported an increase in intimidation tactics, vandalism, death threats, and other activities aimed at disrupting services, harassing providers, and blocking patients’ access to abortion care. NAF provides 24/7 emergency response and security assessments and trainings to abortion providers free of charge. We need your support to continue this work and keep providers safe.
