This morning, the Oklahoma Governor signed an outright abortion ban, which would make providing an abortion a felony punishable with up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. This law could take effect as soon as this summer.
Statement from Melissa Fowler, National Abortion Federation’s Chief Program Officer:
“It is no surprise that Oklahoma politicians are continuing to show little regard for the basic rights and health care needs of their constituents and are instead fixated on advancing an extreme anti-abortion agenda. The total ban signed today is entirely unconstitutional and it is just one of a slew of abortion restrictions advancing in the state.
Oklahomans deserve better than this. The ban signed today is cruel and if it takes effect this summer, will have a devastating impact on people in Oklahoma, neighboring Texans, as well as an entire region facing attacks on their rights to abortion access.
The National Abortion Federation and our members will continue to help Oklahoma residents and those around the region access care quickly even if that means helping patients find providers outside the state and assisting with their travel, if their life circumstances allow it. If you are in Oklahoma and need help finding an abortion provider, call the NAF Hotline at 1-800-772-9100.”
