Today, the National Abortion Federation (NAF) Board of Directors announced that Brittany Fonteno has been named President and CEO. Fonteno will lead the organization beginning on September 1. Fonteno joins NAF from Planned Parenthood Arizona, where she was the President & CEO. Fonteno is the seventh person to lead NAF since it was founded in 1977 and is the organization’s first Black CEO.
Statement from Lorie Chaiten, JD, NAF’s Board Chair:
“We are thrilled to announce that Brittany Fonteno will be joining NAF as the organization’s new President and CEO. In her time as President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Arizona, Brittany demonstrated a deep commitment to abortion providers in her state, working to expand access to abortion care, including medication abortion, in the face of extremists’ challenges, and seeking to advance equitable access to abortion care, particularly for those in marginalized communities who are disproportionately affected by harmful restrictions. She brings more than 15 years of experience working across the reproductive health and advocacy landscape.
“NAF engaged in a rigorous search over the last year to find the right leader for our organization during this challenging time for abortion access, particularly for our members and abortion seekers in the United States. Our priority was to bring on someone who understands the essential role that abortion providers play in the access landscape in the United States, Canada, Mexico City, and Colombia, and who will dedicate themselves to expanding the kind of resources and support NAF can offer members as they continue to provide critical, compassionate, evidence-based care. In addition, we focused on finding a CEO whose leadership will be grounded in NAF’s vision, mission, and values around diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism. We are confident that Brittany brings the kind of empathetic, energetic, and compassionate leadership that is needed to face the challenges of this moment and to advance a strong and innovative NAF for the future, with our community of member providers, the Board, and staff.”
Statement from Brittany Fonteno, the incoming President & CEO of NAF:
“Abortion providers are on the frontlines of the fight for abortion access and health equity. To ensure that patients are able to get the inclusive, equitable care they deserve, providers must have the support and safety they need to do their jobs every day. This could not be a more critical time for abortion providers and their patients. I am honored to join NAF as its CEO, to work with our members to expand access to this critical health care, and to support members by ensuring they have the resources they need to make patient-centered, high-quality care accessible to those who seek it.”
