Statement from Brittany Fonteno, President  & CEO of the National Abortion Federation

I am encouraged that the judge in Georgia’s Fulton County has struck down Georgia’s cruel and unconstitutional abortion ban, highlighting that it stood in direct opposition to Georgia’s right to liberty and privacy. In so doing, the judge emphasized what we have long known to be true: that bodily autonomy and the right to make your own decisions about your life are fundamental to freedom.

I also express my eternal gratitude to all the abortion advocates who have and continue to work tirelessly in service of restoring and expanding abortion access in Georgia. Specifically, Black women leaders have led the charge in this fight, always centering the lives of the most marginalized and who are disproportionately impacted by abortion bans–Black, Brown, immigrant, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ people.

While we are encouraged today, we also remember the lives already tragically lost to Georgia’s abortion ban, including Amber Thurman and Candi Miller, who died entirely preventable deaths and left full lives and communities behind. We also know the fight in Georgia is far from over and that anti-abortion extremists will stop at nothing to fulfill their agenda to ban abortion nationwide. Today, we celebrate this important victory for abortion access, and tomorrow, we get back to the collective fight for true access to abortion care for all.
