Statement from Brittany Fonteno, President & CEO of the National Abortion Federation
Today, our hearts are heavy and our thoughts are with abortion providers and every person who cares about abortion access—these results are a devastating blow to the movement for reproductive freedom. Black and Brown communities, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ communities, who were already disproportionately impacted by abortion bans and barriers to accessing health care will undoubtedly bear the biggest burden as a result of this outcome.
Even so, it’s essential that we remember that the majority of Americans strongly support abortion access and voted in favor of it, with abortion rights measures passing in all but three states where they were on the ballot. This includes Missouri, which passed the first abortion ban back in 2022 after the Dobbs decision and last night, voted to overturn it. Ultimately, the American people believe wholeheartedly in theirs and others’ right to live a life of dignity, freedom, and bodily autonomy.
Make no mistake: Donald Trump is dangerous for abortion access and so many of the other freedoms we hold dear. As president, he enabled the overturn of Roe v. Wade and the suite of state abortion bans and attacks on abortion access that followed. These restrictions have created cruel environments—and life-or-death consequences—for patients who are denied critical care and for providers who risk being criminalized just for doing their jobs. We also know that the election of anti-abortion extremists could further embolden those who want to harass and terrorize abortion providers and patients seeking care.
While this is a devastating result for our democracy, NAF and our members are ready to keep up the fight. We remain deeply committed to helping as many people as possible access abortion care and to ensuring that providers have the resources and support they need to do their jobs safely and provide expert care to their patients. Anyone in any state can call the National Abortion Hotline at 1-800-772-9100 to understand their options and get the assistance they need, whether that’s help finding a provider, arranging travel to another state, or funding for their care. And we will keep fighting until every person, no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they make has the freedom to make their own decisions about their bodies.
