Statement of Vicki Saporta, President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation, on Gov. Ducey’s signing Arizona’s S.B. 1318 into law:
Last night, Arizona Governor Ducey signed into law extreme legislation that puts the health and safety of women in Arizona at risk.
This law will force abortion providers to give patients information about medical abortion care that is unsubstantiated and not supported by evidence—even abortion opponents admit there is no medical proof to support this information. This is unacceptable and not how safe medical care of any kind is provided. In fact, medical experts like the Arizona Section of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposed this legislation.
It’s unconscionable that health care providers in Arizona will now be forced to give their patients misinformation that could be harmful to their health.
The law also makes it more difficult to access health insurance, as it prevents Arizonans from using their own money to purchase separate health insurance coverage for abortion care. Purchasing health insurance can often be a complicated task and anti-choice politicians are adding yet another burden to getting health insurance coverage that works for women in the state.
Women deserve accurate information when making health care decisions and the ability to purchase health insurance that meets their needs. Unfortunately, Governor Ducey has shown a complete disregard for medical evidence in order to score points with abortion opponents, and has placed politics ahead of the health and safety of women in Arizona.
